Unusual Fashion Restrictions in North Korea!

We all are known to authoritative regime of North Korea, under the government of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) led by Kim Jong-un. While human rights breaches in the country have always made headlines, another addition to the list is the ruling party's fashion prohibitions or restrictions on what their residents can do. 

Jong-un recently published a list of prohibited fashion trends in the region's government-run publication, and you'll be surprised at what made the cut.
It comes as a state-run journal warned that more needs to be done to prevent the country from succumbing to "capitalistic culture," according to the Yonhap news agency in South Korea.


The North Korean government's main newspaper, Rodong Sinmum, published an article expressing concern over young North Koreans increasingly adopting western design trends. “We must be wary of even the slightest sign of the capitalist lifestyle and fight to get rid of them,” the piece stated.


Let's have a look at the fashion trends that are banned in North Korea now:


1. ​Skinny jeans: Skinny jeans have become a global trend, topping bestseller lists and remaining one of the most popular styles for women around the world, hence ban!


2. ​Spikes, mullets and dyed hair: According to the publication, the communist dictatorship has forbidden all but 15 "non-socialist" haircuts and instead issued an ordinance on "correct" hairstyles.


3. No long hair for unmarried women: Unmarried women are prohibited from keeping long hair.


4. Mao style suit: The modern Chinese suit, which is Jong's signature style, can't be worn by anybody else except for him.


5. Ripped denim: Ripped jeans has also made it to the list, as it seen as a western cultured outfit.


6. ​Piercings: Lip and Nose piercings are a no-no in North Korea.


7. ​Horn-rimmed glasses: No civilian is allowed to wear glasses that are comparable to those worn by the dictator.

8. ​Branded T-shirts: Branded apparel, once again, is seen as a symbol of western influence and is thus prohibited in the country.


9. Leather trench coats: After Jong first wore the coats in 2019, they quickly gained popularity in the country. Kim Jong Un's next action is to outlaw leather coats in order to prevent citizens from emulating his style.
