WhatsApp faces major outage in India; UPI services also disrupted due to technical glitch

Users in India experienced an outage of the Meta-operated messaging app WhatsApp on Saturday which prevented them from sending messages and performing status updates.

The tracking platform Down Detector received over 81 percent messages from users who struggled with message sending while 16 percent encountered issues across the entire app.

WhatsApp did not provide any prompt public announcement regarding their service disruption.

Late February revealed an enormous system failure of WhatsApp that blocked users worldwide from proper application functionality.

The app dysfunction prevented users from using WhatsApp through mobile and online platforms and from initiating voice calls. The number of complaints on Down Detector reached over 9,000 on that particular day.

The digital payment system based on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) resumed its services for most users when evening arrived following an extensive nationwide technical failure that disrupted millions of customer users throughout the day.

The country-wide breakdown of digital payment service features on multiple online payment platforms impeded users' ability to conduct local shopping and make payments and business transactions.

A social media post was shared by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) - which is responsible for the operations of the UPI services. NPCI outlined that the description was because of technical issues. 

The social media post by the authorities read, “NPCI is currently facing intermittent technical issues, leading to partial UPI transaction declined. We are working to resolve the issue and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused.”
