As per reports, the Arjan Vailly song was originally made by Punjabi folk artist Kuldeep Manak and is based on the life and times of Arjan Singh Nalwa, the son of Sikh military commander Hari Singh Nalwa.
For the unversed, the senior Nalwa was the commander-in-chief of the Sikh Empire’s armies in the early 19th century. His song Arjan Nalwa was born in Jagraon, near present-day Ludhiana. Arjan took over from his father after his death, fighting for the Sikh Empire against the Mughals and more importantly the expanding British rule in India. The lyrics of Animal’s Arjan Vailly describe how Arjan Singh Nalwa created havoc in the field of battle with his gandaasi (battle axe).
However, a journalist named Gurshamshir Singh Waraich expressed that the Arjan Vailly's story in Animal song is not totally factually correct. Raising question to a media portal, he wrote, "According to this report by ... Arjan Valley Punjabi character depicted in Ranbir Kapoor 's movie Animal was son of Hari Singh Nalwa .
