The Covid crisis in India is worsening as several states reported horrifying numbers of coronavirus cases. On this, the WHO chief has expressed concern and said that with continuous high numbers of cases, hospitalizations and deaths, India’s condition is critical. The second year of the global coronavirus pandemic will be ‘far more deadly’ than the first for the world.
WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday, May 14 said, “India remains hugely concerning, with several states continuing to see a worrying number of cases, hospitalization and deaths.”
Responding to the current Covid crisis Mr. Ghebreyesus added that WHO doing everything it can to aid India amid the pandemic. ‘It has shipped thousands of oxygen concentrators, tents for mobile filed hospitals, masks and other medical supplies.’

“And we thank all the stakeholders who are supporting India,” said WHO Director-General.
In the media briefing, the WHO chief also mentioned other countries with alarming Covid surges like India. “Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Egypt are just some of the counties that are dealing with a spike in cases and hospitalizations”. He further added that some countries in the Americas still have a high number of Covid cases and have accounted for 40% of all Covid deaths in the last week.
Mentioning to Covid surge in some African countries, the WHO chief said, “These countries are in heightened response mode and WHO will continue to provide support in all ways possible.”
India has reported more than 3,40,000 fresh coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours and around 4000 fatalities. Over the concerning coronavirus situation in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is chairing a high-level meeting today. The key focus of the meeting will be rising covid cases and ongoing vaccination drive.
