CJI DY Chandrachud's retirement is all set to take place in November 2024. Following DY Chandrachud's retirement, Justice Sanjiv Khanna will be the new Chief Justice of India (CJI). Justice DY Chandrachud was appointed as CJI on November 9, 2022. One of the significant decisions that were taken during DY Chandrachud's tenure was scrapping down electoral bonds law and making the political donor details public. Who is Justice Sanjiv Khanna, next Chief Justice of India?

According to the Supreme Court's official website, Justice Sanjiv Khanna was born on May 14, 1960, and was enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983. Justce Sanjiv Khanna initially practiced in the District Courts at the TisHazari complex, Delhi, and later, in the High Court of Delhi and tribunals in fields as diverse as constitutional law, direct taxation, arbitration, commercial law, company law, land law, environmental law, and medical negligence.

Justice Khanna had a long tenure as the Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department. In 2004, he was appointed as the Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi. He had also appeared and argued in a number of criminal cases at the Delhi High Court as an Additional Public Prosecutor. 

Whilst a judge of the Delhi High Court, he held the position of Chairman/Judge-in-charge, Delhi Judicial Academy, Delhi International Arbitration Centre and the District Court Mediation Centres. On January 18, 2019, Justice Khanna was elevated to a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. He held the post of Chairman of, the Supreme Court Legal Service Committee, from 17th June 2023 till 25th December 2023.

Talking about Justice Sanjiv Khanna's family and Justice Sanjiv Khanna's educational background, his father Justice Dev Raj Khanna retired as a judge of the Delhi High Court and his mother Saroj Khanna was a Hindi lecturer at LSR, DU. Justice Khanna received his early education from Modern Public School, Delhi in the year 1977. After this, he graduated from St. Stephen's College, Delhi University, and after this Justice Khanna studied law at the Campus Law Center (CLC) of the Faculty of Law, Delhi University.

Interestingly, Justice Sanjiv Khanna grabbed headlines and started buzzing on social media after he granted interim bail to (then) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the Delhi Excise Policy case, in which he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Apart from this, Justice Khanna also dismissed a petition seeking cross-verification of votes in EVMs with VVPAT.
