World University Rankings: University of Delhi the most sustainable Indian university while IIT Bombay ranks among the top 150 overall

Global universities' rank, as determined by Quacquerelli Symonds (QS) has been unveiled for the year 2024 with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) taking the top spot for the 12th year in a row in the overall rankings. The QS sustainability rankings rank University of Toronto as the most sustainable university of the world, followed by University of California, Berkeley at 2nd and University of Manchester at 3rd. No Indian university managed to place in top 200 of the rankings, with University of Delhi (DU) being the highest placing Indian university at rank 220, 2nd being IIT Delhi at rank 303 globally.

According to the rankings, no Indian university cracked the top 200 on the board. Delhi University is the most sustainable University of India on the global leaderboards, placing at rank 220 with a score of 76.7, followed by the Indian Institute of Bombay (IITB) placed at rank 303 and Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) at rank 344. 

The top 6 Indian Universities in the rankings are the branches of IIT across the country, Birla Institute of Technology ranks at 7th in India an globally ranks at 444, followed by Vellore Institure of Technology (VIT) at rank 449, Anna university at 496 and the Indian Institute of Science at the 10th spot. 

There are various indicators on the basis of which overall sustainability scores are determined. On the QS Equality indicator, Manipal Academy is the national leader ranking at 463rd highest score. It is also the only Indian Institution in the top 500 in the world based on Equality. All the IITs performed the best on Employability Outcomes with IIT Bombay being the top performer, placing 199th. 

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology of Patiala ranks as the highest Punjabi University at rank 637 followed by Lovely Professional University at rank 672. Panjab University (PU) ranks somewhere in the 1001-1050 bracket.

According the QS world university rankings, IIT Bombay ranks at 149 in the overall ranking with an overall score of 51.7, followed by IIT Delhi and Indian Institute of Science with scores 46.1 and 42.1 respectively. MIT ranks at the top for the 8th year consecutively, University of Cambridge retaining 2nd position and Oxford University moving up a position into 3rd.
