A 19-year-old Dalit girl from Uttar Pradesh has been allegedly gang raped by four upper caste men who also have tried to strangulate her.
The girl has been admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) in Aligarh medical college. She managed to give her statement to the police days after the incident and has stated that she was raped by four upper caste men on September 14 when she had gone to collect fodder for animals.
Earlier, based on her brother's complaint, the police had booked a man identified as Sandeep for attempt to murder and under the provisions of the SC/ST Act. The accused was arrested and remanded to judicial custody after the family alleged that he had tried to kill the girl over some old enmity.
On Tuesday after the girl's statement, rape charges were added to the FIR and three more people were booked. "One more accused has been held and others, too, will be arrested soon," Hathras SP Vikrant Vir, said.
The woman died in Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday morning, nearly two weeks after she was sexually assaulted and tortured by four men from her village on September 14. The case has triggered nationwide protests, with many drawing parallels with 2012’s Nirbhaya incident in New Delhi.
Did Police try to cover up the Case?
There is a crowd of people outside the newly constructed building of Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. People are not happy with UP Police's role in all of this. Hathras police have so far arrested four accused named Sandeep, Ramkumar, Lavkush and Ravi in this case. All four are of the so-called upper caste. However, Dalit organizations allege that the police tried to cover up the case.
First filed a case of attempt to murder only. Only one person was made accused. No one was arrested for ten days. The accused were arrested when Dalit leader Chandrashekhar tweeted and announced to go to Aligarh.
Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee Vice President Deepak Kumar met the survivor and alleged that the family was being threatened by the accused as well as the police.
Lack Of Medical Facility
Meanwhile, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra lashed out at the UP police for their treatment of the victim’s family.
The gangrape victim died in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday. She had suffered multiple fractures, paralysis and a gash in her tongue in the horrific assault that drew parallels to the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape.
The opposition Congress alleged that law and order had collapsed in Uttar Pradesh as the Yogi Adityanath government had "failed to protect women" in the state. The statement came after a Dalit gang rape victim from Hathras passed away in a Delhi hospital on Tuesday.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi alleged that "Law and order had collapsed in the state and there was no protection to women, even as criminals are roaming freely in Uttar Pradesh."
Congress Spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said: "Yogi Adityanath government kept sitting for eight days. Why was no action taken against the culprits all these days? It was only when the case was highlighted that the administration woke up."
UP CM Yogi Adityanat's So called actions on this
The Yogi Adityanath government today set up a Special investigation Team (SIT) to probe the Hathras incident in which a 19-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly gang raped and later succumbed to the injuries.
The SIT, according to official sources, will comprise home secretary Bhagwan Swaroop, DIG Chandra Prakash and IPS officer Poonam.
The SIT will submit its report at the earliest. The Chief Minister, sources said, has decided to send the case to a fast track court in order to ensure justice to the victim.
Undignified Cremation of the victim by Police
There was fresh controversy in the case with family members of the woman claiming that the Uttar Pradesh Police forcibly creamated her in the early hours of the day. The police and Hathras administration denied these allegations.
Indian Youth Congress and Mahila Congress activists today staged a protest after the death of the Hathras gangrape victim and demanded the resignation of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Hundreds of IYC and Women Congress activists led by Srinivas B.V. and Sushmita Deb gathered outside the Uttar Pradesh Bhawan here and demanded resignation of Adityanath. Srinivas said, "To save the criminals involved in the gruesome crime, the Uttar Pradesh government at midnight carried out the last rites of the victim. The government did not even give her family proper time to prepare for the last rites."
"Performing late night last rites of the rape victim has exposed the state government and the Chief Minister must resign from his post," Srinivas said. The IYC and Women Congres activists were detained by Delhi Police.
The protest comes in the wake of cremation of the Hathras rape victim late at night by the administration. However, Hathras police have denied the charges and has issued a statement saying the coercion being talked about on social media is a canard.
Shameful Yogi's "Money" condolences
Amid an uproar over the cremation of the body of a Dalit gang-rape victim early on Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spoke to the 19-year-old woman's father in Hathras district and offered his condolences.
He also announced a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the bereaved family, apart from a job to one of its members. The family would also be given a house.
The victim's father sought the harshest punishment for the four accused arrested for the crime reported on September 14. Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Avanish Awasthi said that the Chief Minister assured the woman's father of the most stringent action against the culprits and all possible help to the family.
Delhi Police detained at least 80 persons who were actually demanding Justice for her
Delhi Police on Wednesday detained at least 80 persons who staged a protest over the Hathras gangrape case. This includes 36 men and 44 women.
"Today around 11.30 pm, members of different parties - AIDWA, DSDU, AISA AIMSS - tried to reach UP Bhawan, SP Marg to stage a protest demanding harsh punishment for accused persons in Hathras gangrape case. We have detained 80 people in this connection," said a senior police officer.

Will Yogi hang the Culprits publicly?
Earlier this week, the Yogi government has issued a new decree to curb crime against women in Uttar Pradesh. UP government will now disrespect such criminals. Posters will be placed at the crossroads of criminals who rape, molest and commit sexual offenses with the girl child.
CM Yogi's operation against the misdemeanors and criminals has started. UP CM Yogi Adityanath ordered the officials to put up posters at the intersections of misdemeanor, professional criminals so that people would come to know about such criminals and boycott their society. It is believed that the rapists will be included in the same criminals who have been convicted by the court.
Well, we don't know what Yogi and UP administration will do but we do know that Women will continue to suffer in this country!!
