Charanjit Channi voices for Amritpal Singh in LS; 'Elected MP behind bars is an undeclared emergency'

Channi in his address came down heavily on the NDA government led by PM Modi and called keeping Amrritpal Singh in jail as an 'undeclared emergency'.

Former Punjab CM & Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi on Thursday participated in a discussion over the Budget in Lok Sabha. The Congress leader in his address came down heavily on the NDA government led by PM Modi. Charanjit Singh Channi also got involved in a verbal spat in the Parliament with Union Minister Ravneet Bittu. Both Channi & Bittu verbally attacked each other and even got personal. While Bittu called Channi the most corrupt politician of Punjab who is also involved in the MeToo movement, the Congress leader said that Bittu's grandfather was martyred but died when he joined the BJP leaving Congress. Apart from this, Channi voiced in favour of jailed MP Amritpal Singh.

Addressing the Lok Sabha over BJP's continuous reminder of emergency during the Indira Gandhi regime, Channi said, "They talk about emergency every day. But, what about the undeclared emergency that is prevailing in the country today? One famous singer was shot dead. Till now Sidhu Moose Wala's family has not got justice. This is also an emergency. This too is an Emergency that a man who was elected as an MP (Amritpal Singh) by 20 lakh people in Punjab is behind bars under the NSA. He is unable to present the views of the people of his constituency, here. This too is Emergency."

For the unversed, before the start of the Monsoon session, Khalistan supporter & Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, lodged in Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act, wrote a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker to participate in the monsoon session. However, it seems like his request was not accepted by the Speaker as Monsoon Session is already underway. 

For the unversed, on 23 February 2023, a crowd of thousands of people led by Amritpal Singh entered the Ajnala police station in Amritsar. After this, a non-bailable warrant was issued against him. On March 18, Amritpal fled from home. The police along with the investigating agencies kept looking for him for a month. On April 23, Punjab Police arrested Amritpal from Moga. Since then Amritpal has been lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam.
