Did Sam Manekshaw plan a military coup against (then) PM Indira Gandhi?

 

The answer is no.  It is a reality that (then) Prime Minister Indira Gandhi suspect that Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw was planing a military coup against her. In fact, Sam Manekshaw in one of his interviews confirmed that Indira Gandhi almost believed that he was planning a coup against her government. 

 

In 2002, Sam Mankeshaw was interviewed by his own grandson for a documentary, 'In War and Peace - The Life of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, MC', in which he talked about this particular episode. The documentary was released by the Parzor Foundation.

 

In his interview, Sam Manekshaw revealed that Gandhi called him into her office one evening for an important conversation. 

 

After that phone call, Manekshaw told his aide-de-camp (ADC) that the 'girl wants' him in the Parliament House. When Manekshaw reached there and asked Gandhi what was troubling her, she replied, "You are my problem".

 

"Everybody says you are going to take over me," said Gandhi, to which Sam Mankeshaw replied in his own style, "And what do you think?".

 

Notably, in the movie Sam Bahadur, the saga has been shown exactly how 'real' Maneskshaw described in his interview. Real-life Sam Manekshaw had said, "I had no intention or even a thought of getting involved in politics or taking over, as long as I command my army without any interference."

 

Who was Sam Manekshaw?

As mentioned above, Sam Manekshaw was the Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, and the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal.  Sam Manekshaw's full name was Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, however, he was respectfully called Sam Bahadur," which means "Sam the Brave" in Hindi.
